Design Challenge

How might we transform static workout logs into a flexible training system that supports planning, tracking, and long-term performance growth?

How might we transform static workout logs into a flexible training system that supports planning, tracking, and long-term performance growth?

Backgound

Zepp’s existing workout history was organized in a linear timeline format—displaying sessions chronologically without offering broader temporal context. While functional for reviewing individual workouts, the system lacked flexibility for planning ahead or identifying trends across time. As Zepp continued expanding its training ecosystem and AI capabilities, the existing structure limited the product’s ability to support more strategic, data-informed athletic progression.

Core Features

01

Calendar-Based Training System

User Pain Point

Workout history lived in a linear timeline that lacked context. Users couldn’t easily see distribution across time or switch between daily, weekly, and monthly perspectives.

Our Solution

Redesigned workout history into a dynamic calendar system with seamless daily, weekly, and monthly views. This structure provides temporal clarity at multiple scales—allowing users to zoom in on a single session or step back to understand overall training patterns.

02

Add & Edit Workout Plans

User Pain Point

Workout entry was restricted and inflexible, limiting user autonomy in planning and adjusting their training schedule.

Our Solution

Enabled flexible workout planning from multiple sources—including custom entries, Zepp Coach AI, training library presets, and third-party platforms. Users can further schedule or edit workouts as needed.

03

Week-In-Review Workout Summary

User Pain Point

Users struggled to connect planned workouts with completed sessions and lacked a clear weekly overview of performance.

Our Solution

Introduced a system that displays planned vs. completed workouts across each day and time slot. High-level stats are surfaced at a glance, with tap-to-drill functionality for deeper workout data — making weekly progress easy to assess.

04

Weekly/Monthly Performance Summaries

User Pain Point

Although workout data was available, users lacked cumulative insights and meaningful comparisons across weeks or months to understand progress.

Our Solution

Designed scalable performance summaries that function across both weekly and monthly views. Users can:

  • View cumulative performance up to a selected date

  • Compare day-to-day or week-to-week trends

  • Evaluate month-over-month progress

05

Bonus Features

AI Pick

A smart highlight stat that surfaces the most meaningful performance insight for the selected week or month.

Customizable Summary Metrics

Choose which workout metrics appear front and center—tailoring performance summaries to individual training priorities.

Workout Type Filter

Filter the calendar by workout type to compare cumulative performance across specific training categories.

Impact

Designed as a flagship training system redesign for rollout to 36M+ monthly active users across 90+ countries. Delivered complete UX flows and high-fidelity designs within a 3-month development cycle.

Design Process

Prioritizing Features and Structuring Product Logic Through UI

Working from an existing PRD and tight launch timeline, I translated high-level feature requirements into cohesive, interactive prototype screens. By clarifying UX logic and mapping product intent directly into UI behavior, I ensured that planning, tracking, and performance insights could coexist within a unified calendar system.

Expanding the Design System for a Flagship Feature

Because the calendar system introduced new interaction patterns and summary logic, it required components that did not yet exist in Zepp’s design library. I refined new UI elements to ensure the feature felt like an evolution of the product rather than a visual departure.

Reflection

01

Introduce milestone-based planning beyond workouts

Allow users to add custom milestone events—such as races or personal commitments—to anchor their training schedule around meaningful goals.

02

Expand comparison beyond fixed parallel time ranges

Enable more flexible, user-defined comparison points (e.g., custom range A vs. range B) to support personalized performance evaluation.

03

Standardize temporal framing across all workout templates

Extend scheduling logic to third-party and preset workout templates, ensuring consistent time allocation and seamless calendar integration across the ecosystem.

04

Enable drag-and-drop schedule adjustments

Allow users to move planned workouts directly within the calendar interface, reducing friction compared to manual edit flows.
